Fuel reduction work is an important tool that forest area managers use to protect communities and other values. The work largely consists of crews with chainsaws, spacing out trees, removing the ladder fuels that can carry fire into the canopy, and pileĀ and burning the debris. Every time I light a pile, and it burns hot for hours, I like to image that I am removing that amount of heat from a potential wildfire, making it that much easier to extinguish in these sensitive areas.
